Cebu City (Cebuano: Dakbayan sa Sugbo), sometimes referred to as The Queen City of the South is the largest city and commercial center of Cebu. Cebu City is the oldest city in the Philippines and is considered to be the second major commercial hub, after Manila.
edit HistoryCebu City's early history was as a coastal fishing village that gained world-renown when Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese explorer who attempted to circumnavigate the globe arrived on Cebu's shores. Magellan arrived in 1521 and planted a wooden cross, bringing Christianity to the Philippines. He was later killed by Chief Lapu-lapu. The Spaniards later colonized Cebu and the Philippines. General Leon Kilat started a revolution against the Spanish. In response, the Spaniards built Fort San Pedro, which is the smallest fort in the country. In 1898, Spain and the United States went to war after the bombing of the USS Maine in Havana, Cuba. The United States subsequently won the war and took possession of the Philippines, along with Puerto Rico and Guam. During World War II, the Japanese imperial forces landed in Cebu City on April 10th, 1942 and created their principal base there due to the strategically positioned location and the extensive population. The Japanese were defeated in March, 1945 after United States forces landed in Talisay. In April 1965, Don Legaspi and Fray Urdaneta ordered the construction of the San Augustine Church, now called the Basilica Minor del Santo Niño. edit EconomyCebu Province has the fastest growing economy amongst the provinces of the Visayas and Mindanao. It is the 5th largest economy overall. As the capital and largest city of Cebu, Cebu City has been a primary catalyst of this growth. Previously, growth had been located in the export sector of manufactured goods, much of them handled in neighboring Mactan Island's Mactan Export Processing Zone. In recent years, economic growth has moved to services, with tourism being a large part of the service-based economy. Much of the other service-area growth has been in business process outsourcing, with many call centers opening around the city, handling accounts from the United States and other countries.[1] The other sectors of business process outsourcing have been accounting, logistics, payroll processing, billings and even document handling[2]. edit PopulationMetro Cebu is the most densely populated part of the Philippines, with Talisay City and Mandaue City being slightly more densely populated than Cebu City. edit WeatherAverage weather is from lows of high seventies to highs of high eighties. The weather is fairly constant throughout the year. Rainfall peaks from May to October, beginning to taper off slightly in November and reaching a low by April. edit CultureCebu is famous for its Sinulog festival, which is held annually the 3rd Saturday in the month of January. edit BarangaysInformation on Cebu City barangays can be found here. edit RiversGuadalupe River, Kinalumsan River edit Links
